Fiber-optics – a new strategic growth sector

Dornach, 5 September 2006

Swissmetal has secured a strategically important order from a leading US supplier of high performance connectors for a demanding fiber-optic application. This is also the first commercial order for the new NP6* alloy. Fiber-optic technology is a sector of growing importance for Swissmetal and its new NP6 and established NM6 alloys. Swissmetal products are used in connectors for glass fiber networks, for example. Such networks are now becoming increasingly common in private homes thanks to Fiber-to-the-Home or FttH. With US telecoms companies pushing forward major FttH projects at considerable speed, the growth opportunities in this sector are highly attractive.

Specialty products such as NP6 and NM6 give Swissmetal substantial competitive advantages and access to high-potential global growth markets such as the new strategic market of optoelectronics.

*About the new NP6 alloy:

The NP6 alloy has been developed, industrialized and patented by Swissmetal in the course of the past few years. NP6 is a material that satisfies the most stringent technical requirements, particularly as regards its stability and fatigue behaviour. It is therefore a suitable substitute for copper-beryllium alloys, which have come under increasing fire due to the toxicity of beryllium. Swissmetal does not produce any beryllium-containing alloys. NP6 is currently undergoing certification by various Swissmetal customers.
