UNIA attempting to interfere in commercial decisions; recommendation to sell jeopardizes Reconvilier site At a media conference on 30 March, the UNIA trade union once again inexplicably attempted to pressure the Swissmetal management into selling operations in Reconvilier. Having held talks with potential buyers, the Swissmetal Board of Directors came to the clear conclusion that no basis for further negotiation exists. The Board of Directors made this final decision as the lawful representatives of Swissmetal's owners. It is not the business of a trade union to determine that units of a company should be hived off or sold. Should such a sell-off fail, it would not be Unia which was liable for the financial cost or the loss of jobs. By attempting to interfere with Swissmetal management's most important responsibilities, Unia is playing Russian roulette with around 200 jobs. The wildcat strike which Unia supported has resulted in enough casualties already.
The Swissmetal Board of Directors underlined at its meeting on 29 March that it stood by the Reconvilier site and that it would do everything possible to save the 200 or so remaining jobs. In doing so, it has assumed commercial responsibility for the future of Reconvilier while at the same time reiterating that this future lies within the Swissmetal Group.
The Board of Directors appeals to everyone involved to make use of the opportunities that mediation affords, in the interests of preserving jobs at Reconvilier. |
